Rumored First Quantum of Solace Wii Screen

modifiedjag.jpg
Here's the litmus test WiiHD has laid down for Wii ports. If the publisher is pushing their PS360 assets on anyone with a pulse, but you can't kick and drag Wii assets out of them, it means the Wii version looks like crap. If there are PS360 previews months before there are Wii previews, the game plays like crap. If the press releases spend lots of time talking about PS360 features and remain ambiguous on Wii features until a month before release, the Wii gets crappy features. It didn't take rocket science to come up with the formula, but it seems to be holding pretty true.

After a lot of time waiting while Quantum of Solace PS360 was hyped and showed off everywhere, NeoGAF user The-Switcher claims to have the first Wii screenshot of Quantum of Solace. This is the game that is supposed to be using the same modified CoD4 engine that WaWii is using. But look at that water (after the break). Bond himself doesn't look that bad (though his jacket does leak into his pants on the lower left), but there's a lot not to like. And remember, this is a screenshot they've chosen to Show-Off the game. Imagine the ones that ended up being rejected as good publicity shots… No, that isn't a poorly textured rug, it's a pool. It's also an omen for 2008 Activision games using the modified CoD4 engine. I'll let you guess whether it's a good or bad omen.

So that's what the modified CoD4 engine can do? It's actually good news in a way. WiiHD has decided to sell our company car after a little tinkering. And we're betting our 'modifed' Jaguar will be super popular on ebay.

The first Wii Screen is after the break. View at your own risk. If you need to recuperate afterwards, go look at The Conduit's gallery.

Wii Multiplayer Loses Steam

codqos.jpg
Once upon a time, players of EA's PSP port, Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (MoHH2), labored under the assumption that every major shooter thereafter would be better in every way than MoHH2. Why wouldn't it be? Yes, MoHH2 got a lot of the fundamentals right, but it was still a PSP port made on a shoestring budget by a team that had never developed for a console before. Those MoHH2 players were wrong.

WiiHD has delayed reporting one of the more depressing details of IGN's most recent preview of WaWii (World at War Wii), but the time has come to bite the bullet. Instead of the 32 player online multiplayer offered by MoHH2, or even the 16 player multiplayer offered by the PS360 version of WaW, IGN indicates that WaWii will have 8 player online. Also, the online vehicle mode Treyarch was so proud of will not be present in WaWii. Finally, no Wii-Speak either (more Nintendo's fault than anyone else's).

Following that news, Nintendojo is reporting (Thanks KeiKong) that Activision and Beenox will be putting a 4 player online multiplayer component into the Wii version of Quantum of Solace—the same number of players available in QoS's offline multiplayer component. This compared to the 12 player online multiplayer component in the PS360 version.

So what improvements are being made over MoHH2? The Call of Duty 4 engine is being used. It was also Treyarch's excuse for dumbing down coop-options for WaWii. WiiHD is grateful that an effort is being made to make Wii games look better than PS2 games. But we never asked for our gameplay to get watered down. WiiHD exists as a conduit for opinion promoting excellence in gameplay, and in these announcements, we are extremely disappointed. So we've put the kind of effort into this post's graphics that Activision has put into the Wii feature set.

New Monster Hunter 3 Video

mh3h.jpg
GoNintendo was trying to embed this last week, but it kept getting deleted from Youtube. It's the video from the Nintendo Event last week, and the first new MH3 video for a VERY long time. It was taken from the audience and at a bad angle, so cut it a little slack. It's got some nice water-based hijinks.

Hopefully, Capcom will release the professionally recorded version before too long. And as always, it's after the break.

Wii Storage "Solution"

31Evq80+k9L._SL160_.jpg

In an effort to make core gamers shut up and leave them alone already alleviate the burden of Nintendo's best Customers that tiny minority of Wii owners who find the internal storage lacking, Nintendo announced they'll be opening up SD storage for active use. Meaning you will be able to launch WiiWare and VC games and what not from the SD card, instead of having to juggle everything endlessly or "clean out the fridge".

Q&A
Q: So we're limited to 2GB, right?
A: 2GB per card. But there are some 4GB cards that aren't SDHC, like this one. They're very popular with Wii owners and Palm PDA/Smartphone users, so when looking for them, be careful and try to find confirmation from user reviews that they really aren't SDHC and really do work in non-SDHC capable devices. Don't simply accept the lack of a label as proof that a card is non-SDHC.

Q: Can Nintendo add SDHC support to already sold Wii's?
A: Yes. It's a software issue, not a hardware issue.

Q: Will they?
A: Probably not, for the same reason they've resisted real external storage solutions to this point. They think it discourages piracy. Case in point, hit the kotaku link below and read as someone asks "but how will we run SSBB off an SD card if it's only 2gigs". Yeah *rolls eyes*. The 2GB (ish) limitation makes some form of piracy a little more difficult than they currently are. At least for half-wits.

Q: Is this the answer to Life, The Universe, and Everything?
A: Clearly not. But it beats nothing. And don't forget, even 12 months ago, Nintendo was confidently proclaiming "redownloading" as the only storage solution you would ever need. This is actually pretty significant progress for ninty.

Q: Can't we already run Quake Wii off an SD card?
A: Yes, but no thanks to Ninty.

Sin And Punishment 2

Sin and Punishment's Wii debut was also its (legal) North America debut. The Japan only N64 rail shooter was critically approved and beloved of core gamers. WiiHD gathers its VC presentation was also a market success, because Nintendo has announced its successor, Sin and Punishment 2, is coming to Wii.

Grab the trailer after the break.

Ah, Punch-Out!! We've missed you. Still, it wasn't until we heard that refreshing, and slightly refreshed theme music on the trailer that we realized just how much.

Now to wait for news of alternative, non-motion based controls…

Check the trailer and screens after the break. It will lift your mood a little.

EXIT DS: Action Puzzling and Indentured Servitude

exitds.jpg
Taito is bringing EXIT, their PSP action puzzler, to the DS. WiiHD was remiss in not bringing this one to your attention earlier. We're all for a great brain teaser, but when we were putting together a 1001 piece "horse in front of barn" puzzle yesterday at WiiHD headquarters, we realized what was missing from the equation: Action! Taito's "Action Puzzler" solution is dramatically better than our idea of trying to put the horse puzzle together while the pieces were on fire. Live and learn.

You are Mr. Esc. With a name like that, your career options were pretty much limited to "professional escapologist". Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to run into the face of danger and peril to rescue the downtrodden from impossible situations, and then escape with them in tow. You work on a contingency, so try to make sure you actually escape WITH your damsel in distress in tow.

EXIT has a pretty sweet gameplay mechanism which they surprisingly did not label "slavery" or "indentured servitude". They call it "turning victims into allies". But we can read between the lines. After you rescue someone, you can make them do some of your heavy lifting in escapes. Back problems can be a real bummer, so why risk yours when you can put a resentful delinquent grateful rescuee to work for you?

Speed is a big part of the game, and Taito doesn't want you to be the only one to appreciate your super-fast scores and mad skills, so you can upload your times from over a hundred different missions via WiFi and show them off to the world.

Out in Europe this month. In the US on November 4th. Video and screens after the break.

Behold the DSi

dsi.jpg
"i" as in "eye", I assume. Clever (deadpan).

2 cameras. No GBA slot, and thus, thinner. SD slot. On board memory for a DSWare game download service. Bigger screens. Launches 11/11 11/01/08 (Japan) for 180$. US Launch will come at a yet to be decided date well into 2009.

DSWare sounds cool, so I'm a fan of storage. Screen size can't hurt. No GBA slot seems tragic. Cameras seem like a precursor to a thousand "face-trainer" games, not my thing.

How about you? What do you think?

Moon Shots (DS)

alphabase.JPG
Yes, Call of Duty: World at War is coming to DS. Yes, Quantum of Solace is coming to DS. But the DS shooter WiiHD is most eager to see is Moon. From the makers of Dementium, another original DS shooter, this bad boy has all the makings of a dark and cool portable shooter experience.

Renegade Kid was kind enough to dump a load of new screens on us, so we're dumping them on you. Catch the gallery after the break.
