Exclusive Civ Rev Technology Guide

gandhi.jpg
WiiHD has completed its very own Civilization Revolution Technology Guide (360, PS3 and DS). We've optimized it for printing and downloading (.pdf) and included ALL First to Discover Bonuses, even those for Future Technology not available in the Demos. It's been hard, given that WiiHD operates, not a shoe-string budget like you'd expect, but on a Cheezit budget. And we have to share the Cheezits with the hamsters that power our 486 DX 25mhz laptop sophisticated blogging equipment.

Information was gathered from the official 2k Civ Rev website, and 2k forum user (owner of a Euro version of Civ Rev) Aaron-82, and was carefully reorganized for easy viewing and printing. As far as we know, there's no other guide that matches its convenience and completeness anywhere. Not even inside the game itself.

Also hit the Civ Rev site for guides on Units, Buildings and Wonders. (That link helps you bypass the original site's annoying and long flash interface. You're welcome.)

Hit the break for the full and exclusive guide in all it's glory.

Civ Rev DS won't have Voice Functionality

gandhivc.jpg
The title pretty much says it all. WiiHD is very disappointed, though it can't have been easy fitting the entire game on a 256mb game pack. Today on the 2k forums, Jason2k confirmed that the DS version will ship without Voice Chat.

Does that rub you the wrong way? Do you care?

Civ Rev Demo: How to Get Advanced Tech

civi.jpg
I'm calling for volunteers to help me expand on the Civ Rev Tech Tree to include some Advanced Tech. After the break, I've outlined how to attempt to get advanced tech. One of them is semi-confirmed.

Anyone who contributes to the tech tree will get named recognition in a post, and a link to their site or whatever forum they haunt. Contributions should take the form of tech-beaker-resource-wonder-unit-building-bonus, and can be posted in the comments below.

Hit the break for details.

IGN's Civ Rev (DS) Preview (plus Video!)

gandhi.JPG

Lacking a version for Wii, WiiHD chooses instead to revel in the DS version Civilization Revolution, the latest in the incredible Civilization franchise. This week, IGN brings us a Civ Rev DS Preview with new video footage, Victory details, multiplayer details, examples of scenarios, and a few frustrations. Last week, WiiHD gave you a Tech Tree.

Remember, this a streamlined re-imagining of Civilization. It's meant to ward off late-game boredom with a faster pace, lasting just a couple of hours instead of 60+. It's more multiplayer friendly, and better suited for consoles. The DS version plays just like the others, but it has flatter, 2d graphics instead. Now for the preview. IGN is wordy, so WiiHD is going to give you the lean skinny.

The bad: 1) The stylus was poorly implemented, so just count on using the dpad the entire time. That's sad because that could have been a big bonus for the DS version. 2) The game prevents you from entering the territory of friendly civs, and unlike earlier games, you cannot negotiate a Right of Passage. As a result, getting walled off early is bad. 3) Nothing to do while waiting for your turn. IGN doesn't make it clear, but WiiHD knows that the PS360 versions of Civ Rev feature simultaneous turns, and the DS probably does too. This means you all move at the same time during one turn, but once you're finished, you have to wait for everyone else to finish as well. 4) There's no way to zoom out and look at the whole world at once, making the experience feel constrained. It sounds like it could be harder to orient yourself in some instances.

The details: Victory comes by 1) Exodus to Alpha Centauri, 2) Capturing 4 (all) enemy capitals 3) Achieving 8 Economic Milestones or 4) gaining 20 Great People or Wonders. Villages are in Civ Rev, just like other Civs. Some are hostile and fight you, others will offer exchanges—you teach them a tech, they'll provide you with something, like spies or intel. Multiplayer is just like single-player, with you and up to 4 other people. The game is streamlined more than other Civs partly because of the emphasis on multiplayer, so it should be a nice experience. Scenarios There are ten total, and include things like stronger barbarians, alternate starter technology, and starting later in a more aggressive and faster paced game.

Check out the videos after the break. All FOUR of them =)

Sid Speaks, Civ Rev (Wii) Hope Springs Eternal

civrevwiimote2atttd1.jpg
Sid Meier's yesterday told GameDaily yesterday that they're still considering the platform, and they "have no intentions of turning our backs on" Wii. Of course what else are you going to say when the questioner asks the question in such stark terms? They may as well have asked "Why do you hate making money, Wii owners, and kittens? WHY?!?"

But I still trust Sid. As far as WiiHD knows (AFAWiiHDK), Civ Rev (Wii) is still possible. Keep hope alive. And hit the break for the full quote.

Sigmakan Can... Document Civ Rev Tech Tree

ghandis2fg7.jpg

Update!! New Complete Tech Guide available

2K forums' user Sigmakan has gone through a lot of work to document the Civilization Revolution Tech Tree, including details on beakers, resources, units, buildings, governments, and best of all, bonuses for first discovery from the demo released Thursday. Some tech is locked out of the demo, so it isn't a complete list yet, but it's nice to see nevertheless. Since we've been told that all versions play the same, this list should ring true for the 360, PS3, and even the DS version of the game. And maybe even that eternally temporarily shelved Wii version someday. Keep hope alive, and hit the break to see Sigmakin's spreadsheets.

Why Civilization Revolution Isn't Coming to the Wii

24358222561df1c07b99hg7.jpg

WiiHD is a huge fan of Civilization and Sid Meier's in general. So when we heard about Civilization Revolution, a consoles only reimagining of his long-lived Civilization franchise, we were excited about the possibilities. Briefly, it appeared that the Wii would receive an in-house port of Civ Rev, albeit several months after the PS3, 360, and DS versions. After a couple of months of letting us think that, Firaxis/2K made the decision to cancel forever shelf development of the Wii version indefinately.

Because of the vastly different requirements for the 360/PS3 platforms and the Wii platform, development for Wii had to be from the ground up, whereas PS3 development could share the 360's assets. With manpower and resources limited, the Wii really was the most logical choice to be cut. WiiHD hates that this is true, but sadly it is. They would have us hold out hope that if the game does well, a Wii version might still be developed, so consider purchasing it on the DS or 360. Hit us after the break for quotes and links.
