Happy Groundh...errr, Hedgehog Day

hedge.jpg
What's Sega been up to lately? A lot. In a special Sega-day celebration, Kotaku gets their mitts all over a load of great fare:

Madworld

The Conduit

Bayonetta

Well look at that. Sega does what Nintendon't.

New MADWORLD Trailer is... MAD

mw.jpg

When last Kotaku got their hands on MadWorld, they felt it might be a little repetitive (though probably not as repetitive as the, uh "MAD" post titles that are all the rage /abject shame). It's hard to know from a distance, but the new MADWORLD trailer looks as though there are plenty of ways to kill and mutilate your fellow game show players. Watch it after the break.

In other MADWORLD news, Nintendo Wii Fanboy tells us that MADWORLD, amongst others, won't be released in Germany due to a restrictive ratings system.

Finally, to round out the MAD news cycle, Nintendo Wii Fanboy brings us counter-coverage of MADWORLD's violence from freelancer Thom Binsdale. He looks at backlash from the British Press, founded on the idea that Wii was supposed to be THE family-friendly console, and wonders if the casual crowd will be as accommodating of the core crowd as we have been of them. Core Wii players (this is WiiHD speaking, not Thom), have never been happy about not getting core games, but they haven't really begrudged the casuals from having their fun. The main complaint is that while Nintendo has been catering to casuals, they've largely ignored the core. If that changes, as it seems to be, core gamers are going to perfectly happy no matter how successful Wii Fit is. Thom thinks that, judging from the British Press' reaction, casual gamers may not be quite so accomodating. They may not want to share their gaming platform with… you know… games.

Shocker. Now watch the trailer after the break.

Kotaku Goes Mad (MADWORLD Wii)

mw.jpg

Last week at E3, Kotaku got an eyeful of MADWORLD, one of the Wii's hardest core exclusives and were kind enough to share it with the world.

As part of the game's schtick of you being trapped in a TV show run by terrorists, there are in-game commentators talking about the level of brutality you use as you kill and judging you as you go, throwing in quips and humor that appear to keep the game from just being senseless violence and add to that over-the-top feel MADWORLD shoots for.

Kotaku likes the look at first blush, but wonders if it will have lasting appeal. They're also concerned about the repetitive nature of the gameplay. Will there be anything to keep it fresh, and fun to play? We'll have to wait and see.

Catch the video and screens after the break.

WiiHD's MADWORLD Gallery Cometh (NSFW gallery)

madworld.jpg

Things are really heating up for core Wii gamers. The Conduit was one of the first signs of great things to come, then CoD5 not only didn't skip Wii, it isn't porting our version from PS2. We've got Quantum of Solace coming, and new core exclusives like Deadly Creatures (DCWii) being announced regularly. One such Wii exclusive is the over-the-top MADWORLD, and it doesn't get much more hardcore than this (so maybe NSFW).

In MADWORLD you are the captive of terrorists, forced to participate in their little game known as Death Watch. To survive, and to get the terrorists, you'll need to become the master of the game, killing foes in outrageous ways with an odd selection of weaponry. Preferably without going insane. MADWORLD has minigames, but not like you've ever seen them before. You'll be playing human darts and other excessively violent minigames in your quest to survive.

The game promises fast and instinctive gaming for an arcade style of play, and there will be finishing moves as you put down your opponents. And those minigames will be available in a hotseat mode so you can compete against friends for the highest score.

Even if survival horror or over-the-top violence isn't your cup o joe, you should be excited about titles like MADWORLD. They represent a sea change for core Wii gaming. Although Nintendo may never give us what we want, the Wii's enormous install base is attracting attention from more than just the makers of Petz (coming soon: Piranhaz… wait, that could actually be cool). Not all developers are ashamed to be working on Wii anymore, and we're not getting C and D teams for Wii ports anymore (though it remains to be seen what level of quality we'll see from QoS or COD5, we may still be stuck with some B teams for a while).

Hit the break for 16 MAD screens and some zany game footage.
