Preliminary Conduit Gun List from Trailer

Update: My visual guide has been updated. At first I thought I had two different angles on the shotgun, and labeled them accordingly, but upon further inspecting, one gun has the letters "AK6" on the side, where the shotgun does not, and several other details make it clear it isn't the same gun. The labeling has been changed.

JTRamboman, good friend of WiiHD and highly respected member of Wii Troopers, has spent away some his valuable youth gleaning important details on The Conduit's weapons cache, presumably from IGN's Hi-Def trailer and some screens. He's got names, he's got capacities, and he's got descriptions. He even gleaned some gameplay details. In other words, he's got ALL our numbers.

While we were all drooling over the pretty colors and fast pace and taking embarrassing amounts of great pleasure in the explosions and blood, JTR was being an enormous geek and actually writing stuff down looking for the devil in the details. Hit the break to see them and the trailer, then head over to gamefaqs to thank him for being a geek.

Okami (Wii) Makes Hi-Def Digest Feature

In his column titled "Artful High Definition Games," Wayne Santos examines games as an emerging art form. There's one platform unexpectedly covered in this HD column—it's the only 7th generation console that doesn't support High Definition (720p and higher) output, and that frequently rejects photorealism in favor of heavily stylized graphics. You've already guessed what platform that is? My aren't you clever.

Okami on Wii makes an appearance in his list of artful high definition games, and receives high praise for its appearance, gameplay, and innovation. It may not have been born on Wii, but it's more at home here than virtually any other title, and WiiHD loves it for coming home. Catch some more quotes after the break, or do yourself a favor and read the whole thing.

Even though the game is on the Wii and not actually an HD game, its rewarding gameplay, gorgeous art design, and more innocent themes make it a game well worth owning….

Red V Blue

Does red have an unfair advantage? I mean besides Donut, of course. According to a study of 1,347 matches of Unreal Tournament 2004, red does. If WiiHD had done the study, we would have studied 1337 matches, but the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the journal Cyberpsychology & Behavior didn't ask us. The Denmark study had the red team winning 55% of the time, even though after that many matches you'd expect it to all settle into even territory.

The University suggests that this may be because red is a psychological distraction to men, on the possibly evolutionary basis that "men flush and turn red when they're angry." Well yes, in Denmark that probably is a common reaction of men to anger. At WiiHD headquarters redness is mostly a side effect of exhaustion, inflicted by such actions as walking across a room, or lifting a glass to get a drink. As of the time of this posting, the University of Denmark has not commented on this alternate explanation, that Blue players are exhausted by watching their red counterparts shoot at them, and are unable to press buttons as fast. We'll let you know when they confirm our theory, but in the meantime hit the break for a little of the classic Red Vs Blue by Rooster Teeth.

If you haven't seen it, you should. NSFW (language).

Conduit Release Date!

GoNintendo has a press release from High Voltage Software (WiiHD's favorite developer) which just makes us love them all the more. In addition to giving us a release date in the not-too-distant future (Q1 2009), Eric Nofsinger, Chief Creative Officer at High Voltage Software, opens up a can of whoop asterisk worthy of song with this quote:

Too many Wii owners have been told that the Wii is a casual platform with no room for serious games or top-tier graphics. With The Conduit, we intend to prove that theory wrong by providing gamers with the kind of title they imagined back when the platform was first announced.

Booyah! Hit the break for the full press release.

Star Soldier R Tournament

Category: Better Late than Never
Starting May 27th, Hudson began running a tournament with their new Star Soldier R shooter for WiiWare. You have until June 24th to register at their website, and then try to get the high score in the 5 minute mode. Just for registering for the tournament, you also get entered into a competition free sweepstakes with a random chance to win some swag.

The award distribution is a little odd, as prizes don't go to the first 3 places. Instead only the top scorer, the 10th scorer (in honor of this being the 10th Star Soldier game) and 16th scorer (in honor of the freakishly fast trigger finger of Takahashi Meijin) get prizes. Hit the break to see the prize list and some SSR video footage.

Sid Speaks, Civ Rev (Wii) Hope Springs Eternal

Sid Meier's yesterday told GameDaily yesterday that they're still considering the platform, and they "have no intentions of turning our backs on" Wii. Of course what else are you going to say when the questioner asks the question in such stark terms? They may as well have asked "Why do you hate making money, Wii owners, and kittens? WHY?!?"

But I still trust Sid. As far as WiiHD knows (AFAWiiHDK), Civ Rev (Wii) is still possible. Keep hope alive. And hit the break for the full quote.

Call of Duty 5: World at War Deets

Treyarch's Call of Duty 4.5 Call of Duty 5 is starting to take public shape, as GamesTM lays out some details. CoD5 will be coming to Wii, in addition to the 360, PS3 and PC. Although the Wii version will be developed by a separate team, all versions will use the same COD4 engine (because Treyarch can't be trusted to make their own). According the GamesTM, since all platforms will be on the same engine, CoD5 the most meaningful comparison between Wii graphics and PS360 graphics yet.

Zapper support is in (like we care), and COD5 will be the first Call of Duty to feature Coop play. Squad-based combat, and vehicle features are on the menu as well. The setting is, as expected, the Pacific theatre of World War II. The nature of the game is described as especially "gritty". Anyone who's seen the WiiHDmobile knows my standard for grittiness is pretty exacting, so we shall see. We'll bring you more as it comes out.

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri 2

Why I want EA to buy Take Two.

I was wondering through old posts on the 2k forums the other day, and noticed a request for SMAC2. A 2K producer responded and explained that EA owned Alpha Centauri, so it was unlikely Sid would be working on it anytime soon. Then I remembered that the last time the Alpha Centauri Planetary Pack was released, it was in a pack of 4 EA games.

Suddenly all the fracas about EA purchasing Take Two was more than just background noise. Suddenly I was a fan of the takeover, despite my not to latent hostility towards the behemoth, customer-hating company that is EA. Suddenly I saw a path to Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri 2. Or even Alpha Centauri Revolutions. And I liked it. I liked it a lot.

Nintendo's Mysterious USB Job Listing?

Nintendo has a job listing, found by Nintencast with Nintendo seeking a "Software/Hardware Tester" whose responsibilities are "Creating and executing a test plan for Wii’s USB devices". This could be anything from a proprietary Wiimote charger to new controllers (like the USB Boogie Mic). But the hope on all our minds is that it is the long await storage solution. Given Miyamoto's recent words on the matter, maybe that's not such a foolish hope. But it probably is.
